Traveling with Pets on Public Transport: The Current State
In recent years, the global pet population's growth has spurred changes in many countries' regulations concerning the transportation of small animals via public transport systems. As pets become more integrated into dly life and travel plans, national trn operators and local authorities have adapted their policies to accommodate this new reality. GlobalPETS has compiled an overview of current developments across various nations.
China
The National Rlway Operator in China, China Rlway, recently initiated a survey seeking the public's views on allowing pets to travel aboard high-speed trns under specific conditions. The questionnre, which was distributed among passengers with or without pets, solicited opinions about pet companionship during trn rides, acceptable pet types, fees, and required protective measures.
This initiative followed numerous inquiries from passengers about future possibilities for pet travel since the launch of this survey. In other developments, Shangh has already opened a limited scope to public transport for pets, while Shenzhen International rport welcomed its first pet lounge in May 2024. This pet-frily area ensures the comfort and safety of animals before boarding flights.
India
The Rani Chennamma Express connecting Bengaluru Karnataka's capital with Sangli Maharashtra introduced four family cabins within r-conditioned coaches that allow pets on board in response to passenger demand. Passengers are required to inform the station agents two hours before departure.
Umesh Shah, a member of India's Rlway Development Group, expressed hope that this feature would facilitate travel for pet owners by stating: Often when traveling with family, you have to leave your pet behind. With these cabins on Rani Chennamma Express being utilized for such purposes.
Australia
Pet owners in New South Wales NSW have advocated for exting the public transport policies of Victoriawhere pets are allowed across trns, metro systems, and domestic flightsto NSW as well. NSW Minister for Transport Jo Haylen is reportedly considering changes to the current policies governing pet travel on public transport within the state.
Twan
Tpei’s Mass Rapid Transit MRT network announced that two trns will serve as pet-frily transport options from September 2024, circulating eight times per day. The Tpei Rapid Transit Corporation TRTC has marked these pet trns with stickers indicating Pet Trn in Chinese to facilitate easy identification.
Saudi Arabia
In a significant policy shift, Saudi Arabia allowed small pets on public buses, trns, and boats as of 2023. The Transport General Authority outlined specific rules, including requirements for passengers to confine their pets within boxes or designated areas and ensure they do not pose risks to other travelers' mobility.
Spn
Since the beginning of 2024, Renfe, Spn's state-owned high-speed trn operator, has permitted the transportation of pets dogs, cats, ferrets, guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits weighing under 10kg on all routes. A pet fee of €10 $10.8 applies for each trip.
These developments reflect a growing acknowledgment of pets as part of families and an increasing demand for pet-frily travel options across various transport networks globally.
